Ear infections, also called otitis media, can become severe and cause distress, particularly in infants and children. Infants are more susceptible to ear infections because their auditory canals are more horizontal compared to older children and adults, and this leads to trapped fluids in the ear. Ear infections can be caused by bacterial and viral infections that spread from the nasal passages, sinuses, throat, lungs and other areas. Delicate inner ear structures such as the ear drum may be...

Ear tube surgery involves the placement of a tube in one or both ears to drain excess fluid present behind an infant's ear drum. What is a middle ear infection?
The middle ear is the small part of your ear just inside your eardrum. when it gets infected liquids and air accumulate and apply pressure on the ear drum which causes ear pain.

A small tube connects your ear to your throat. A cold can cause this tube to swell. When the tube swells enough to become blocked, it can trap fluid inside your ear. This makes it a perfect place for germs to grow and cause an...

The Glue ear is a condition in which the middle ear fills with glue-like fluid. The condition is more common in children than in adults. The fluid dampens sound waves, or the vibrations of the tiny bones in the middle ear. The glue like liquid decreases sound transfer to the inner ear and leads to muffled hearing. We found only one small, good-quality study (randomised controlled trial). The study found that grommets helped prevent ear infections for six months but not in the long term.
This study was small, including just 44 children. More research is needed to decide whether surgery to put grommets in should be used for ear infections.

What are myringotomy tubes (also called ear tubes, tympanostomy tubes, or ventilation tubes)?

Myringotomy tubes are small tubes that are surgically placed into your child's eardrum by an ear, nose, and throat surgeon. The tubes may be made of plastic, metal, or Teflon®. The tubes are placed to help drain the fluid out of the middle ear in order to reduce the risk of ear infections. During an ear infection, fluid gathers in the middle ear, which can affect your child's hearing. Sometimes, even...

Though adults are not affected as frequently as children, it is important for adults to be aware of how adult ear infection can affect them. Adult ear infection is caused by infection in the Eustachian tube, near the inner ear. The Eustachian tube connects the inner ear to the nasal passages in order to drain fluid from the ears and equalize pressure between outside and inside of the body, but when fluid or mucous builds up in the Eustachian tube, it is an easy target for infection.

When the germs bother your outer ear, it’s called swimmer’s ear.
The middle ear is a small pocket of air behind the eardrum. You have a middle ear infection when germs get into the middle ear and the...

Prevailing medical treatment - until now, treatment has involved the use of steroids and pseudo-epinephrine to reduce edema, with antibiotic cover for primary bacterial infection or secondary complication. If medical treatment fails and inflammation recurs despite extended antibiotic treatment, the usual practice is to perforate the tympanic membrane and ensure that it remains open by inserting tiny drainage tubes.
